The invention of self-shielding copper substrate neutron guides is described, along with the rationale behind development, and realisation commercial supply. relative advantages respect to existing technologies are quantified. These include ease manufacture, long lifetime, increased thermal conductivity, enhanced fast attenuation in keV-MeV energy range. Whilst activation initially higher than for other material options, full spectrum, many isotopes short-lived, so that realistic maintenance access times radiation dose workers expected be lower steel lowest zoning category safety outside spallation target monolith.
